Job Description

The Multilingual Learner (MLL) Teacher will help provide and guide instruction for MLL students at Roxbury Prep. The MLL teacher will work closely with the school-based Individual Needs Coordinator, Director and Associate Director of Individual Needs, as well as with teachers and leaders across the network. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Demonstrate a relentless drive to improve the minds, characters & lives of students both in and out of schoolShow unwavering commitment to urban youth achieving greatnessCo-teach with English and/or History teachers, as well as provide support and feedback to other content teachers on SEI strategiesComplete case management and MLL compliance responsibilities as directed by the Individual Needs Coordinator and Director of Individual NeedsAttend and participate IEP meetings for English Learners as directed by the Individual Needs CoordinatorCreate a positive, structured learning environment to ensure that students observe the school’s core values, high expectations, and strict code of conductImplement curricula and activities to meet academic and language acquisition standardsDesign and implement assessments that measure progress towards academic and language acquisition standardsUse assessment data to refine curriculum and inform instructional practicesParticipate in the collaborative curriculum development processProvide consistent rewards and/or consequences for student behavior to ensure that students observe the school’s core values, high expectations, and strict code of conductBe accountable for students’ mastery of academic and language acquisition standardsShare responsibility for grade-level and school-wide activitiesExhibit resilience to persevere and turn challenges into opportunitiesFocus constantly on student learning, thinking critically and strategically to respond to student learning needsCommunicate effectively with students, families, and colleaguesEngage families in their children’s educationCommit to continual professional growth, participating actively in department meetings, faculty meetings, and other meetingsParticipate in an annual three-week staff orientation and training

QualificationsDrive to improve the minds and lives of students in and out of the classroom;Proven track-record of high achievement in the classroom;Mastery of and enthusiasm for academic subjects;Evidence of self-motivation and willingness to be a team player;Bachelor’s degree is required; Master’s degree is preferred; andMinimum of two years teaching experience in an urban public school or charter school setting preferredBy the time that employment begins, candidates must have received a Bachelor's degree from a College or University. For teaching roles in New York and Massachusetts, candidates must have also earned a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher by the time employment begins. For teaching roles in New Jersey, the candidates must have earned a cumulative 2.75 GPA (for candidates graduating before September 1, 2016) or 3.0 (for candidates graduating on or after September 1, 2016).Valid State Certification is helpful but not required. Belief in and alignment with Uncommon’s core beliefs and educational philosophy is non-negotiable.

All ESL teachers or teachers of EL students must have obtained a MA educator license in:

English as a Second Language (ESL) orEnglish Language Learner (ELL)14 orTransitional Bilingual Education (TBE) endorsement

ESL teachers must be appropriately ESL licensed prior to the first day of employment, in order to serve students identified as English learners. Unlike some core academic teachers, ESL teachers do not have a year to earn this licensure. ESL Teachers must have the ESL license prior to beginning employment.

Compensation

Compensation for this role is between $57,000 to $105,000. 

Starting pay is determined using various factors including but not limited to relevant full-time teaching experience, education certifications, and tenure with Uncommon Schools. Candidates without full-time Teaching experience will likely have a starting salary of $57,000.
