About Our Team 

As part of our team, you will manage the operational process for your own portfolio of academic journals while collaborating with a large team of Journal Managers. We operate a hybrid working policy, with office attendance requested in our centrally located Exeter office one day per week. The office is open and available most days for staff who prefer to come in. 

About the Role 

Within Elsevier, our Data Management team is responsible for providing hands-on data management activities, mainly focusing on the Operations data warehouses. We work closely with IT in making Operations data available for Business Intelligence and Data Analytics within Elsevier. 

You will support the product managers in making sure all data management-related aspects are delivered in a timely manner. You will enable collaboration between our business stakeholders and IT team and be that bridge between the business and technical developers. 

This role ensures data governance aspects are adhered to, assuring the availability, usability, integrity, and security of the data within the operations data warehouses. 

Responsibilities 

Collect business/functional requirements from the business 

Design solutions in collaboration with the product manager, stakeholders, and IT 

Responsible for the development lifecycle of agreed development stories through all stages of development through to production delivery 

Responsible for investigating and qualifying change requests/requirements, pushing back on those which do not fit with the systems' functional strategy 

Provide standardized data source(s), fully supported by IT, that all users can access 

Update Tableau data sources if any changes are applied in the underlying data sources 

Ensure Tableau server standards have been met before the data source is published to the Tableau server and eventually promoted to production (TRUSTED – Timely, Reliable, Unvarying, Safe and Secure, Traceable (back to source), Easy to use, Defined Limitations) 

Participate in stakeholder meetings 

Operate in an agile development environment collaborating with key stakeholders 

Monitor data warehouse performance/outages and notify stakeholders accordingly 

First line support for the business, responsible for investigating/fixing issues/queries 

Create and modify ad-hoc queries (SQL) related to Snowflake warehouses 

Ensure the data sources are always functional and available to all stakeholders 

Support business and/or IT with data subject matter expertise 

Develop and maintain support materials including support hub, process documentation, FAQs, guided answers, and data dictionaries in Business Data Catalog (BDC) 

Define and enforce standard naming conventions 

Provide ad-hoc dashboard services as deemed appropriate to support data warehouse-related activity/performance 

Requirements 

Strong proficiency with SQL 

Proficiency with databases (Snowflake preferred) 

Good understanding of ETL processes 

Proficiency with data analysis tools and processing 

Demonstrated ability and desire to learn new processes, tools, and technologies 

Agile development knowledge – including the use of Jira, continuous integration 

Strong problem-solving experience 

Attention to detail 

Strong oral and written communication skills 

Skills in stakeholder management 

Experience working with cross-functional teams 

Experience with tools such as dbt and Tableau Online 

Proficiency in data visualization (Tableau preferred) 

Experience in Python is a plus 

Knowledge of data management frameworks such as DMBOK 

Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience required 

3+ years of experience in data management with demonstrated analytical competencies
